  60. This is **NOT** true at all. I have gone though 3 generations of Tos 1.4
  61. releases (developers disk based Tos 1.4, the ?feb eprom one, and now
  62. the real one) without re-formatting anything. heck one of the drives
  63. i am still using was formatted pre-mega-tos, and still has'nt given me a
  64. single problem.

  85. What's UN*X? I am on a VAX w/VMS. The preblem with ARC'ed filed is as
  86. you describe... the terminal usually locks up. I do have Xmodem, but I
  87. don't think the system does. As far as I can tell, when I call from
  88. home, the VAX thinks I'm just another terminal.

  118. I beg to differ with _your_ observations Ken. My observations using a Mega ST
  119. with TOS 1.2 and 1.4 with and without the blitter, with and without different
  120. software accelerators. I don't disagree that Turbo ST runs faster with the
  121. blitter chip, since it checks for and uses the blitter, but the speed increases
  122. are far from being "_much_ faster". I'd use that term to apply to the speed
  123. increase obtained by using Turbo ST alone, and the term "_slightly_ faster"
  124. to describe the additional speed increase that the blitter gives you. Hope
  125. you're not trying to sell us some vaporware blitter chips <grin>. Someone
  126. else did mention that "your mileage will vary" but you have yet you convince
  127. me that the blitter chip can significantly outperform tightly coded assembler
  128. code in real life situations (not rigged Comdex demos).
  129. Why not just apply some of the same types of optimizations that Turbo ST uses
  130. in the next version of TOS? I'm sure there were better things to do with time
  131. and code than putting rainbows into the desktop.

  157. I wasn't aware that Neochrome supports variable resolutions. Somebody
  158. actually thought ahead was back in 1985?  :-)  I have also received
  159. some email about the IMG format also supporting variable resolution. The
  160. question still remains, what format will Atari and/or developers decide to
  161. make the standard on the new machines (and Hyperscreen modified STs)? Or
  162. will this be a wait and see situation? And how with the Getrez() function
  163. work on the new machines?

  196. 1) On my UNIX workstation at work I put all the uuencoded parts in a single
  197.     file of mailbox format
  198. 2) uud the file
  199. 3) doswrite the file using the 3.5 floppy drive on my UNIX box
  200. 4) Take it home an copy it my atari

  282. I finally tried to use the last version of << GNU AWK >> that came down
  283. the pike to do some global text search and delete (since FOLDED 0.9e
  284. lacks the ability to search and replace control codes).

  286. I quickly review what I needed in the book << The AWK Programming
  287. Language >> and tried the following:

  291. This was meant to globally search and delete all undersorce-backspace
  292. combinations (I'm stripping a formatted file of cude underlining and
  293. other code that mess up my printer).

  295. However AWK keeps giving me an "error near line 1" and quotes just
  296. about the whole line. What's wrong?

  298. I don't even know the diffs between << GNU AWK >> and the implementation
  299. described in the above book. There was no documentation. All I remember
  300. was a comment or a small readme that said I should get a copy of my UNIX
  301. version's man page. Was there any docs with << GNU AWK >> and if so are
  302. not my rights to it being abused by not providing it (as mentioned in
  303. every GNU COPYING & LICENSE notice)?

  330. I think Atari has their hands more than full with the emminent releases
  331. of TOS 1.4, Portfolio, Lynx, STacy, and the TT!  Perhaps their strategy
  332. with the Lynx is to let Nintendo corner the market again and then sue
  333. them for having a monopoly.  <grin>

  345. Well folks, after my two days of work and two days at the dealer my TOS 1.4
  346. equipped Mega 2 is now running FLAWLESSLY.  The HD needed to be rebooted
  347. and all my programs were restored from original floppies (not the HD back
  348. up which failed to work for some reason.)  I also discovered that my bombs
  349. that were happening on the color monitor are *most likely* attributed to the
  350. game's copy protection - NOT the TOS ROMs because I've seen a few posts
  351. from people who had problems with the same two titles even under TOS 1.2.
  352. I give TOS 1.4 a big Thumbs Up and recommend it - the differences ARE
  353. noticable and pleasant - I just wish that I had a clue as to why my problems
  354. happened as they did.  Another Strong Recommendation for Atari is to provide
  355. some documentation with the TOS 1.4 upgrade, not even my dealer knew
  356.

  372. Well something went wrong with my first posting (only the .sig got out), so

  375. This is a known and documented bug having something to do with virtual
  376. files.  It was discovered it many, many months ago.  It has been reported to
  377. WordPerfect and it has been fixed IN THE LATEST VERSION.  This bug only
  378. occurs in the 1988 version.  But, if you report having problems with this
  379. bug, you will get the 1989 version sent to you FREE (otherwise you will have
  380. to pay WordPerfect $17.50 to ``upgrade'' to the 1989 version).
